There is so much information in today’s world. There are so many online courses platforms that are available. While they are all different, they all range from any subject you can think of. They also range in level from beginner to expert and some even have specialization or programs. This list shows you massive open online courses (MOOCs) with recommendations.

Academic Earth

A listing of online courses where the site asks you what you want to learn and connects you to different sites like Khan, MIT Open Courses, etc. While their library is easy to use and user friendly, Academic Earth does not develop their own courses and most often than not you will see sponsored banners of universities.

While Coursera offers many different courses, you have to ask for Financial Aid in order to get the course for free. They gather the best universities in the world and have different starting dates for different topics. If you want to take a specialization, you might have to pay. Specializations are small programs in which you learn from a topic in different sections.

Courses offered by Blackboard in their open course software where universities create courses and upload it to Blackboard’s online platform. According to the site, the platform is free and is hosted by Blackboard. Non-English Courses

EdX

Service started by Harvard and MIT to create university level courses to the world. While it is very user friendly, the courses range from math to history to many other subjects. The program also allows the user to get a certificate when of learning when the course is complete, however, payment is expected. While the courses can also be taken for free, the user will not get a certificate in the free option. The reviews are also great since reviewers are able to take a look at the comments and decide if this is good for what they are trying to accomplish.

Harvard has offered free courses through their Harvard Extension School. Some courses even have a trailer that shows the student what to expect in the class. However, not all of the courses from Harvard Extension School are free. There are 800+ courses that one must pay in order to take them. One must be careful and browse the site in order to determine which course to take and evaluate if paying for a course is worth it. The greatest thing is there is no application required to study at Harvard Extension School.

Khan Academy is a way to learn subjects. While their software is designed for tutoring, they focused on videos to solve a problem. While they are not courses, they are videos that follow one after the other. You also do not have to wait until a class starts or ends, you can keep going until you finish all the videos for that particular subject. From the creators of LinkedIn, Lynda is a web based training tool that offers solutions for businesses, academic bodies or government agencies. Lynda allows these agencies to train their employees or students on specific tasks related to their field. Lynda is ideal for an employer or an agency, not so much for the self-learner, although self-learners can also learn through the Lynda platform, it is up to the student!
