Education in a Different Way
“Why do I need to study in this way?” Have you ever asked yourself this question when you were in school? There are so many things you can be doing in the day, but for some reason you want to get an education and you are trusting that the education you are receiving is a good education that could, potentially, lead to a better job, better life. Have you ever wondered if there are different ways to learn based on your skills and learning abilities?
Spoiler alert! People learn in different ways… There are different, highly effective ways of learning. Why can’t we open up our minds and understand it?
Take for example the Montessori system which shows children at a very early age basic concepts using didactic games. Children who go to a Montessori school go to school to have fun and learn. In our society, learning and having fun seem to have contradictory meanings. Well, they don’t have to be. After all, isn’t life all about learning? What message are we giving our children if we don’t motivate them to learn? If we follow the story, then every school in their own way should motivate children to learn and have fun doing it.
Oh yeah, and there are other types of educational systems.
Take ancient Greek philosophy, for example. Learning was about coming together in the “Academy” that was founded by Plato and talk about philosophy, civilization, wisdom and how to rule the civilization. Plato followed the techniques and ideas of Socrates and Aristotle followed Plato. You could say that the first university emerged out of Plato’s vision for learning. We know from Plato’s writings that learning was done in dialogue form as Plato’s ideas were passed down in dialogue form.
Another major example is John Dewey who promoted democracy in all areas of life, including education. Dewey believed in practicing education and in having a “pragmatic way of learning”. Education did not end, it was a lifetime of learning, according to Dewey, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”
What am I getting at?
There are different forms of learning that allow an individual to learn in his or her own way. As working adults, we see challenges in going back to school or studying in a reputable university. However, understanding that there is an alternative is important for you, society and for the evolution of the world. Plato’s and Dewey’s ideas were ahead of their time. In today’s world we need to challenge the status quo and come up with a better way to educate our children and educate ourselves. We need to take a stance and finally understand that learning is not about going to school, but is about making and opening up learning for ourselves.
How do we do that?
It is not easy, but you can start with one person, yourself. Simply understanding the fact that we need to change and evolve as a society is the first step. With so much information out there, there are so many ways to learn and only you can dictate how that is. Think back in your schooling years, which subjects, if any, did you enjoy the most? Were you better at counting numbers than telling stories? Think of a particular time when you understood something that was so challenging. How did that feel?
Now the next step is to apply our learning into the way that we enjoy learning the most and being creative. Take tests if you desire, write essays if you enjoy or pretend to own a business and come up with business plans. The sky is the limit and learning can be done in very different ways. Book clubs, professional associations, conferences, experiences, they all shape us into who we are and who we are going to be. Taking into account those experiences will allow you to focus into the learning system that makes sense for you.
I hope you understand that you have the keys. You can be anything you want to be. I want you to know that life is a journey of learning and figuring out this world, called life. To live is to constantly learn and to learn one must live!
